What is a Cocoa Bean?
A cocoa bean is the seed from a special tree called Theobroma cacao. These beans are used to make chocolate and other sweet treats. The cacao tree grows in warm, rainy places near the Equator, like the Amazon rainforest.
Cacao trees can live for up to 100 years! It takes about five years for a cacao tree to start making beans. The beans are found inside big, round pods that grow right on the tree’s trunk. Inside each pod, there are sweet pulp and many seeds that will become cocoa beans.
A Long History
People have enjoyed cacao for thousands of years. It was first used at least 5,300 years ago by the Mayo-Chinchipe culture in South America. Later, the Maya and Aztecs in Mesoamerica used cacao beans in special ceremonies and even as money.
Today, most cocoa comes from West Africa. The Ivory Coast grows the most cocoa beans in the world. Other big growers include Ghana and Indonesia.
