What Is a Flock?

A flock is a happy group of birds that come together. They do this to find food and have fun. Birds love to fly in groups, especially when they are going to new places. Being in a flock helps birds feel safe and find food easier.

Flocks in Nature

Birds often stay with others of their same kind. But sometimes, you can see mixed flocks! That means two or more types of birds fly and eat together. These birds are usually friends because they look and act alike. Flying together helps them stay safe, especially in forests.

Fun Time with Flocks

When birds are in a flock, they work together. If one bird spots danger, it can make a special sound to warn everyone. This helps the whole group stay safe. Young birds learn from older ones how to stay safe and find food.

A Special Sky Show

In Denmark, something very special happens twice a year called sort sol, which means β€œblack sun.” During this time, huge groups of European starlings gather and make beautiful patterns in the sky. These birds are getting ready to travel and find food. Flying together keeps them safe from hawks.
