Discovering Göbekli Tepe
Göbekli Tepe is a very old place in Turkey. It has big stone circles that people built a long, long time ago. These stones have wonderful carvings of animals and shapes that tell us about life back then.
Göbekli Tepe is near a village called Örencik in Şanliurfa Province. It sits close to the Taurus Mountains and looks down on a flat area. Long ago, this spot had lots of rain and wild grains that people could eat. Animals like wild sheep, wild goat, and gazelle lived nearby, too.
People started building Göbekli Tepe around 9500 BCE. This was a time when humans were just beginning to live in villages. The big stone buildings might have been places where people met together. Scientists found tools and stones that show everyday life, like processing grains.
An archaeologist named Klaus Schmidt found Göbekli Tepe in 1963. He started digging there in 1995. In 2018, it became very important when it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Only a small part of Göbekli Tepe has been explored, so there is still much to learn about this amazing place.
