Giant Panda

The giant panda is a special bear that lives only in China. It has beautiful black and white fur. The black patches are around its eyes, ears, legs, and shoulders. Pandas are about as tall as a grown-up person and can weigh as much as a big dog.

Pandas love to eat bamboo. They eat almost only bamboo, including the leaves and bamboo shoots. They have a special thumb on their paw that helps them hold bamboo while they eat. Because bamboo does not give them many nutrients, pandas eat a lot—up to 14 kilograms (31 pounds) a day!

These amazing animals live in the mountains of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. They need forests full of bamboo to survive. People in China work hard to protect panda homes so they can stay safe.

Giant pandas are loved all around the world. They have become a symbol of China and were one of the five Fuwa mascots for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Pandas are also popular in zoos, where people can come to see these gentle giants up close.
