Republic of the Congo

The Republic of the Congo is a beautiful country on the western coast of Central Africa. It is often called Congo-Brazzaville to tell it apart from its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country is named after the big Congo River that flows nearby.

Where It Is

The Republic of the Congo is surrounded by many interesting places. To the west is Gabon, to the north are Cameroon and the Central African Republic, and to the south and east is the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It also touches the special area called Cabinda, which belongs to Angola, and has a lovely coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

Nature and Wildlife

This country has amazing forests, rivers, and beaches. It is warm and humid all year, with temperatures around 24 °C (75 °F). The land includes savanna plains, flooded forests, and even some rugged mountains. The Republic of the Congo is home to wonderful animals like western lowland gorillas and many colorful birds.

Cities and People

Two big cities are Brazzaville, the capital, and Pointe-Noire, a busy port town. People in the Republic of the Congo speak many languages, with French being the official one. The largest group of people is the Kongo, but there are also Teke, Mbochi, and Pygmy communities.

Many families live in the southwest part of the country, especially in cities. Life in rural areas can be a little harder, and sometimes people need help from the government.
