The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are a list of amazing buildings and places made a very long time ago. People made this list in a book called Octo Mundi Miracila in the year 1572. It is like an old travel guidebook showing the most amazing sights people could see.
The seven wonders are the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Temple of Artemis, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. These wonderful places were in different lands: two in Greece, two in Turkey, two in Egypt, and one in Iraq.
Today, only the Great Pyramid of Giza is still standing. The others were lost over many years, but people can still see pieces of some of them in museums or visit the places where they once stood. People have always been very interested in these wonders. They have made art and traveled to see the places where they were built.
People have been making lists of amazing sights for a very long time. Alexander the Great helped people travel to new places like Egypt, Persia, and Babylon. These travels inspired many wonderful lists of amazing things to see.
