What Are Shellfish?

Shellfish are special animals that live in water. They have hard shells to protect them. You can find them in both salty oceans and fresh rivers and lakes. Shellfish include many different kinds of creatures, like clams, mussels, oysters, shrimp, lobsters, and crayfish. They are eaten all around the world because they taste yummy and give us important food.

Where Do They Live?

Shellfish love to live in water. Some stay in the ocean, while others live in lakes and rivers. They are very important for the places where they live. For example, oysters and mussels can stick together and make reefs. These reefs help keep the water clean and give a home to many tiny sea creatures. They also protect the shore from big waves.

Shellfish Around the World

People in many countries enjoy eating shellfish. In Japan, they eat shellfish in dishes like sushi and sashimi. In the United States, especially along the coast, lobster is a favorite. Families might have a special meal called a clam bake to celebrate. In Louisiana, people love to eat crawfish and shrimp. Oysters are enjoyed in many places, often eaten fresh at special bars near the water.

Shellfish are not only tasty but also help keep our water and oceans healthy and beautiful.
