Sulawesi: A Special Island
Sulawesi is a big, beautiful island in Indonesia. It is one of the Greater Sunda Islands and is the world's 11th-largest island. Sulawesi sits east of Borneo, west of the Maluku Islands, and south of Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. It is close to many interesting places!
Sulawesi has four main parts that stick out like arms: the northern Minahasa Peninsula, the East Peninsula, the South Peninsula, and the Southeast Peninsula. Three deep parts of the sea separate these areas: the Gulf of Tomini, the Tolo Gulf, and the Gulf of Boni. The Strait of Makassar runs along the west side of Sulawesi.
People have lived on Sulawesi for a very long time. Very old cave paintings were found in Maros, showing that early humans lived there and made beautiful art. The island has many different people groups, each with their own languages and traditions. Many people follow Islam, especially in the southern parts, while others follow Christians in the north.
Sulawesi is full of wonderful animals and plants. You can find special mammals like the anoa, a tiny buffalo, and babirusas, which look like pigs but are very unique. There are also many birds, like the maleo, which uses hot sand to cook its eggs. The island's forests are home to many interesting trees and flowers. Some of these plants and animals can only be found on Sulawesi!
The island has many places to explore, such as Bogani Nani Wartabone and Lore Lindu National Park. These parks help protect the island's special nature. Sulawesi is a wonderful place with a rich history and amazing wildlife!
