The Wa People
The Wa people are a special group who live in parts of Myanmar and China. Most of them make their home in the northern areas of Shan State and Kachin State in Myanmar, close to the border with China. In China, they live mainly in Yunnan Province.
The Wa people have lived in the rugged, mountainous areas between the Mekong and the Salween River for a very long time. They grow rice, peas, beans, walnuts, and also raise water buffaloes. Their language, called the Wa language, is part of the Mon-Khmer family.
Wa culture has many interesting traditions. They enjoy special dances and gatherings. Some Wa people follow Buddhism, some follow Christianity, and many practice animism, believing in the spirits of nature.
The Wa people have their own unique stories. One story says their first ancestors were two women named Ya Htawm and Ya Htai, who began as tadpoles in a lake where China and Myanmar meet. Their history is filled with rich customs and a strong sense of community.
