Bangiomorpha
Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Adventurer experience
Bangiomorpha pubescens is a type of red algae that lived over a billion years ago. It was found in rocks from the Hunting Formation on Somerset Island, Canada. It looks a lot like modern red algae called Bangia.
What makes Bangiomorpha pubescens very special is that it is the oldest known organism to reproduce sexually.
Scientists saw special cells in the fossil. These cells showed that this ancient alga could mix genetic material from two parents. This way of reproducing is important. It creates more variety in offspring. This extra variety helped life on Earth change and grow faster. It set the stage for many plants and animals we see today. Finding Bangiomorpha pubescens gives us a rare view of how life worked over a billion years ago.
