Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Fitjar is the administrative centre of Fitjar Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is on the northwestern shore of the island of Stord. It sits at the southern end of the Fitjarvika bay, a small part of the larger Selbjørnsfjorden. Many small islands are near the coast to the west. Fitjar Church is in the middle of the village.
A long time ago, in the year 961, an important event called the Battle of Fitjar happened here. Today, Fitjar covers an area of 1.61 square kilometres and has a population of 1,826 people. It is a small but important place in the area.
Name
The village of Fitjar and its municipality are named after an old farm called Fitjar. This is where the first Fitjar Church was built. The name "Fitjar" comes from an Old Norse word meaning "meadowland by a lake or river". Long ago, before 1900, people spelled the name as "Fitje".
