Hero of Alexandria

Hero of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician and engineer. He lived in Alexandria during the Roman era, probably in the 1st or 2nd century AD. He is often called the greatest experimentalist of ancient times.

Hero made many important inventions. He described a steam-powered device called an aeolipile. This was an early form of Hero's engine. He also created a windwheel, the first known example of using wind power on land. In his work called Mechanics, he wrote about pantographs, a tool used for copying drawings at different sizes.

In mathematics, Hero wrote about Euclid's Elements and created a work called Metrica about applied geometry. He is especially famous for Heron's formula, a way to find the area of a triangle when you know the lengths of its three sides. Even though many of his original writings have been lost, some of his works survived through manuscripts from the Byzantine Empire and translations in Latin and Arabic.

We do not know much about his life, but his writings show he taught about mathematics, mechanics, physics, and pneumatics. Many of his works may have been notes from his lectures.

Hero made many clever devices. One of his most famous inventions was the aeolipile, an early steam-powered engine that spun when steam was heated. He also made a vending machine that gave out water when a coin was put in, a wind-powered organ, and machines to make sounds like thunder in Greek theatre. Other inventions included a pump for moving water, a fountain that worked on its own, and a way to measure temperature using air expansion and contraction. In math, Hero developed methods for finding square roots and a formula for calculating the area of a triangle.
