Reptiles are interesting four-legged animals that belong to the class Reptilia. They include groups like turtles, crocodilians, snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards, and the tuatara, along with animals that lived long ago. The study of these animals and amphibians is called herpetology.

This list of reptiles groups these amazing animals by family and includes two smaller groups. In this list, the word "reptile" is used in its common way, which is not a complete group of animals. This means it does not include birds. While birds are scientifically a type of reptile, they are not on this list.

Turtles are reptiles with hard shells. They belong to the order Testudines and have two main groups. The group Cryptodira has many well-known turtles such as common snapping turtles, alligator snapping turtle, pond turtles, box turtles, tortoises, Asian river turtles, pignose turtles, softshell turtles, river turtles, mud turtles, sea turtles, and leatherback turtles. The group Pleurodira includes turtles like Austro-American sideneck turtles, Afro-American sideneck turtles, Madagascan big-headed turtles, and American sideneck river turtles.
