The Riau Archipelago is a group of islands located in Indonesia. It lies south of Singapore and east of the mainland island of Sumatra. These islands form the core of the Riau Islands Province, which was created to give this beautiful area its own special status.
Before the province was formed, people simply called the area "Kepulauan Riau" in Indonesian. Sometimes, to make things clearer, they would add the word "Provinsi" before it.
Today, the Riau Archipelago is also known by the short name BBK, which stands for Batam Bintan Karimun. These islands are known for their natural beauty and are an important part of Indonesia's geography and culture.
History
The Riau Archipelago has a long and interesting history. Long ago, from about 650 CE to 1377 CE, it was part of the powerful Srivijaya empire. Later, the area was influenced by the Jambi Kingdom and the Kingdom of Singapura. During the Islamic era, control passed to the Malacca Sultanate, and later to the Johor Sultanate.
In more recent times, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 placed the islands under Dutch control. In 2002, the Riau Islands Province was created, separating from Riau Province. Today, the area continues to develop and play an important role in maritime trade.
Social change
The Riau Archipelago has seen changes in its people and communities. The Malay people, who used to be the largest group, now make up only about a third of the population. This shift happened because many people from other parts of Indonesia moved to the islands. Both the Malays and the new residents have sometimes faced challenges and disagreements.
Another issue in the area is piracy. It is still a problem that affects the region.
Islands
The main islands of the Riau Archipelago are Batam, Rempang, Galang, Bintan, Combol, Kundur, and Karimun. Tanjung Pinang, on Bintan Island, is the capital. Tanjung Balai Karimun is an important international port.
Transport
Fast ferry services go to the nearby Lingga Islands. These ferries help visitors get to the beautiful islands in the area.
