Stephen Smale (born July 15, 1930) is an American mathematician. He is known for his work in topology, dynamical systems and mathematical economics. His research has greatly helped many areas of mathematics.

In 1966, Smale received the Fields Medal. This is one of the highest awards in mathematics, given for important contributions to the subject.

Smale worked for over 30 years at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1960 to 1961 and then from 1964 to 1995. During this time, he made big steps forward in understanding complicated math problems. Today, he is a Professor Emeritus and still works on issues related to algorithms, numerical analysis and global analysis. His ideas are still used by mathematicians all over the world.

Education and career

Stephen Smale was born in Flint, Michigan. He studied at the University of Michigan. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1952 and later got his PhD in 1957. Smale began teaching at the University of Chicago.

Smale spent much of his career at the Berkeley mathematics faculty, starting in 1964. He became a professor emeritus there in 1995. He also taught at the City University of Hong Kong and the Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago. Smale received many awards for his work, including the Chauvenet Prize in 1988 and the Wolf Prize in 2007.

Research

Stephen Smale made important discoveries in mathematics, especially in areas called topology and dynamical systems. He showed that certain shapes can be twisted and turned into each other in surprising ways, a concept known as sphere eversion. His work also helped solve big problems, like the generalized Poincaré conjecture.

Smale also created a list of 18 challenging math problems for the 21st century. This list inspired many mathematicians, and some of these problems are still being worked on today. His ideas have had a lasting impact on many areas of math and computer science.

Steve Smale wrote many important books about mathematics. One book from 1980 talks about how systems change over time and how money moves in economies. Another book from 1998, written with other mathematicians, looks at how complicated things can get and how computers solve real problems.
