Chickadees are small, friendly birds found across North America, belonging to the family Paridae and the genus Poecile. They are known for their distinctive calls, often sounding like "chick-a-dee-dee-dee," which they use to warn of danger. These birds are usually between 6 to 14 centimeters (2.4 to 5.5 inches) long and have a darker crown and throat patch compared to the rest of their bodies.
The black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) holds special significance as the official bird of Massachusetts and New Brunswick, as well as the cities of Calgary, Regina, and Saskatchewan. While Maine also names a chickadee as its state bird, no specific species has been chosen, though there was a proposal in 2019 to name the black-capped chickadee for the state.
In other parts of the world, some chickadee-like birds are called tits. One widespread species, found in both North America and Eurasia, is known as the grey-headed chickadee in North America and the Siberian tit in Eurasia. Chickadees are popular among birdwatchers for their charming appearance and unique calls.
Habitat
Chickadees are native to North America and are found everywhere from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from Canada to Mexico. They live in many types of places, including mixed forests, parks, open woods, cottonwood groves, willow thickets, and areas that have been disturbed by human activity. These birds are very common across their range.
Memory
Mountain chickadees are food-caching birds. A single bird can hide as many as 80,000 individual seeds, which they retrieve during the winter. Their ability to do so depends on their spatial memory of the locations. Birds that live in harsher conditions, where remembering the location of food is more important, have been found to have better memory abilities, a larger hippocampus, and more neurons than chickadees that live in milder climates.
Species
Chickadees are small birds found in North America, and they belong to the genus Poecile. Some well-known species include the Black-capped chickadee, Boreal chickadee, Carolina chickadee, Chestnut-backed chickadee, Grey-headed chickadee, Mexican chickadee, and Mountain chickadee. Each of these birds has unique features, but they all share a small size and distinct markings on their heads.
