List of two-dimensional geometric shapes

Adapted from Wikipedia ยท Discoverer experience

Two-dimensional geometric shapes are flat figures that can be drawn on a surface, like paper or a screen. They have length and width but no depth. These shapes are important in math, art, and everyday life. For example, you might see circles, squares, and triangles in your toys, buildings, and even in nature.

This list includes many different kinds of two-dimensional shapes found in Euclidean geometry, which is the type of geometry most people learn in school. It also includes shapes from other types of geometry. Learning about these shapes helps us understand how things fit together and how space works.

If you want to learn about shapes with more dimensions, you can look at the list of mathematical shapes. For a wider variety of shapes, both flat and three-dimensional, check out the list of shapes. Studying geometry helps us solve problems, create designs, and appreciate the world around us.

Generally composed of straight line segments

Main article: Polygon

Two-dimensional shapes made of straight lines are called polygons. Simple polygons have straight sides connected in a closed loop. Examples include triangles, which have three sides, and quadrilaterals, which have four sides like squares and rectangles.

Polygons can have many sides: pentagons have five, hexagons have six, and so on. There are also special shapes like stars, known as star polygons, which have points that extend outward. For example, a pentagram is a five-pointed star.

Curved

Main article: List of curves

Two-dimensional curved shapes can be made from parts of circles or from other smooth, flowing lines. Shapes made from circular arcs include the annulus, arbelos, and circle, which has many special forms like Archimedes' twin circles and the Reuleaux triangle. Other curved shapes not made from circles include the Archimedean spiral, ellipse, and cardioid. These shapes appear in nature, art, and many areas of mathematics.
