The mint julep is closely linked to the Kentucky Derby, a big horse race in Kentucky. Since 1938, Churchill Downs, where the race happens, has promoted the mint julep. Every year during the Kentucky Derby, around 120,000 mint juleps are served in special collectible glasses.

Over the years, different brands have been chosen as the official mint julep of the Kentucky Derby. In 2015, Old Forester, made by the Brown-Forman Corporation, became the official drink. Sometimes, Churchill Downs offers very fancy mint juleps for $1000 each, made with special ingredients and served in gold-plated cups to support retired race horses.
