Geography
The administrative region of Upper Franconia borders several places. To the north, it is next to Thuringia (Thüringen). To the west, it meets Lower Franconia (Unterfranken). To the south-west, it is close to Middle Franconia (Mittelfranken). To the south-east, it borders Upper Palatinate (Oberpfalz). To the north-east, it is near Saxony (Sachsen), and to the east, it touches the Czech Republic.
History
After the founding of the Kingdom of Bavaria, the state was reorganized and in 1808 divided into 15 administrative regions, called Kreise. These regions were designed to be similar in size and population, much like the French departements.
Over time, due to territorial changes such as the loss of Tyrol and the addition of the Palatinate, the number of Kreise was reduced to 8. In 1837, King Ludwig I of Bavaria renamed these regions after historical names and tribes. The Mainkreis was then renamed to Upper Franconia.
