1985 Ice Hockey World Championships

The 1985 Ice Hockey World Championships took place in Prague, Czechoslovakia from April 17 to May 3. This was the 50th World Championships and the 61st European Championships of ice hockey. Eight teams played each other once. The top four teams then played again to decide the final rankings.

Czechoslovakia won the world championship for the sixth time, and the Soviet Union won their 23rd European title. This tournament was special for a few reasons. The Soviet team played without their famous goaltender Tretiak for the first time since 1969. Canada did very well, defeating the Soviet Union for the first time since 1961.

Sweden did poorly, having their worst finish since 1937. This tournament was also the last time East Germany played at the top level. The event ended with some trouble during the bronze medal game between the US and the Soviet Union.

World Championship Group B (Switzerland)

The 1985 Ice Hockey World Championship Group B happened in Fribourg from March 21 to March 31. In the last game, the Swiss team needed to win by more than four goals to win the tournament. But the Dutch team surprised everyone by winning six to two.

Poland moved up to Group A, while both Norway and Hungary were moved down to Group C._

World Championship Group C (France)

The 1985 Ice Hockey World Championship Group C happened in Megève, Chamonix, and Saint-Gervais from March 14 to March 23.

Both France and Yugoslavia moved up to Group B. For France, this was their first time back at this level since they did not join before because of a protest.
