The 7th National People's Congress was an important meeting. It took place from 1988 to 1993. Leaders from China came together to discuss and make decisions about the country's laws and policies. The National People's Congress is one of the main ways China makes its big decisions.
The 7th National People's Congress held five big meetings, called sessions. These meetings let leaders talk about important issues and decide what should happen next for the country. This Congress was a key part of how China was governed during those years.

Elected state leaders
In 1988, during its first session, the 7th National People's Congress chose several important leaders for the country. These leaders included the President of China, the head of the government's main committee, the Premier who managed the government's daily work, the leader of the military, and the heads of the top court and legal office.
The leaders elected were:
- President of the People's Republic of China: Yang Shangkun
- Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress: Wan Li
- Premier of the State Council: Li Peng
- Chairman of the Central Military Commission: Deng Xiaoping
- President of the Supreme People's Court: Ren Jianxin
- Procurator-General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate: Liu Fuzhi
Third session
On April 4, 1990, the third session of the 7th National People's Congress approved an important law called the Hong Kong Basic Law. This law helped guide Hong Kong's future and it officially started being used on July 1, 1997.
