ACM SIGGRAPH

ACM SIGGRAPH is the international Association for Computing Machinery's Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, based in New York. It started in 1969 by Andy van Dam. Before that, ACM SICGRAPH began in 1967.

ACM SIGGRAPH brings together many computer experts each year at the yearly SIGGRAPH conference. The group also helps with many other meetings around the world and has events for its members in different countries.

Committees

The Professional and Student Chapters Committee (PSCC) helps guide ACM SIGGRAPH groups around the world. You can learn more about these local groups below.

The International Resources Committee supports people worldwide in the ACM SIGGRAPH community. They offer help with review for non-English speakers and encourage everyone to join SIGGRAPH conferences and events.

Awards

ACM SIGGRAPH gives out six awards to honor great work in computer graphics. These awards are given at the big yearly SIGGRAPH meeting.

Steven A. Coons Award

The Steven Anson Coons Award is the biggest award in computer graphics. It is given every other year to people who have done amazing work in computer graphics over their whole lives. It is named after Steven Anson Coons, who was one of the first experts in computer graphics.

Computer Graphics Achievement Award

This award is given each year to people who have done something really important in computer graphics. Their work helps make computer graphics better and is still important today.

Significant New Researcher Award

This award is given each year to a new researcher who has done something really good in computer graphics.

Distinguished Artist Award

This award is given each year to an artist who has made lots of great digital art that has made computer art more beautiful and interesting.

Professional and Student Chapters

ACM SIGGRAPH has local groups called Chapters that meet all year. These groups include people from education, research, art, industry, and entertainment who are interested in computer graphics and interactive technologies.

Some examples of Chapter activities include:

  • MetroCAF is an annual computer animation festival in the New York City area, organized by the local ACM SIGGRAPH chapter.
  • Bogota ACM SIGGRAPH hosts one of the largest animation and visual effects events in Latin America.
  • ACM SIGGRAPH Helsinki holds an evening graphics conference called SyysGraph each autumn, featuring the latest in 3D graphics and interactive technologies.
  • Silicon Valley ACM SIGGRAPH held a panel discussion about the visual effects in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with Industrial Light & Magic.
