American Family Insurance started on October 3, 1927, when a man named Herman Wittwer opened Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wisconsin. At first, the company only offered car insurance to farmers because Wittwer thought they were safer drivers.

In 1963, it changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to show that it served many kinds of people, not just farmers. In 2017, the company started a campaign called DreamFearlessly.
