Archery at the 2020 Summer Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Archery at the 2020 Summer Olympics was a fun part of the games in Tokyo. The events happened in a park named Yumenoshima Park.
For the first time, there was a mixed team event. In this event, men and women worked together as a team.
The Olympic games were planned for 2020. They were moved to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Archers from many countries came to compete. Archery is a sport where players use a bow and arrow to hit a target far away. It was one of the sports fans enjoyed during the Olympics.
Qualification
There were 128 spots for archers at the 2020 Summer Olympics: 64 for men and 64 for women. Each country could send up to six archers, with three men and three women. Countries that qualified teams could send three archers per team event, and each of those archers could also compete in the individual event. Japan, as the host country, had six reserved spots, and four more spots were decided by a special commission. The rest of the spots were earned through a qualification process.
For the mixed team event, there was no separate qualification. Instead, the top 16 countries with both a man and a woman who scored well in the early ranking rounds would qualify for the mixed team competition.
Competition format
A total of 128 athletes were expected to compete in five archery events at the 2020 Summer Olympics: men's individual, women's individual, men's team, women's team, and mixed team. The mixed team event was new for these games.
All events used recurve archery under World Archery rules at a 70-meter distance. The competition began with a ranking round where each archer shot 72 arrows to determine their seed from 1 to 64. This ranking also decided the seeds for the team events and the 16 pairs for the mixed team event.
Each event used a single-elimination tournament format, with the semi-final losers competing for the bronze medal.
Individual events
All 64 competitors started in the first round, with the draw based on the ranking round results. Matches were scored using the Archery Olympic Round, with five sets of three arrows each. The winner of each set earned two points, and a tie gave each archer one point. If tied 5–5 after five sets, a single arrow shoot-off decided the winner.
Men's and women's team events
The top four teams from the ranking round received a bye to the quarter-finals. The next eight teams, seeded 5th to 12th, competed for the remaining quarter-final spots. The team event used the same set system as the individual event but with six arrows per set (two per team member) and only four sets.
Mixed team event
The top 16 seeded teams from the ranking round competed in a single-elimination bracket. Each set used two arrows per team member (four arrows per team) and had four sets in total.
