Asam brothers
Adapted from Wikipedia Β· Adventurer experience
The Asam brothers (Cosmas Damian Asam and Egid Quirin Asam) were talented artists. They worked together as sculptors, painters, and architects. They made beautiful art, mostly in southern Germany.
They are some of the most important artists from the late Baroque time in Germany. Their work shows the rich and detailed style of the Baroque period.
Life
Cosmas Damian Asam and his brother Egid Quirin Asam were two of nine children of Hans Georg Asam (1649β1711), a painter in Benediktbeuern Abbey. They learned from their father and later went to Rome to learn more.
The Asam brothers were strong Catholics and their art showed their faith. Their most famous building, the Asamkirche in Munich, was built as a special place for prayer. They used clever lighting and design to create special feelings in their buildings. Both brothers worked well together, with Cosmas Damian painting and Egid Quirin designing buildings and decorations. Their art became famous in many places, including Upper Palatinate, Bamberg, Weingarten Abbey, and Weltenburg Abbey.
