Axel Thue
Axel Thue was born on 19 February 1863 and passed away on 7 March 1922. He was a Norwegian mathematician.
Thue is best known for his work in two areas of math: diophantine approximation and combinatorics. Diophantine approximation helps mathematicians understand how numbers can come close to each other. Combinatorics helps count arrangements of objects in special ways.
Thue’s ideas have inspired many other mathematicians. His work remains important for solving new math problems today.
Work
Axel Thue published his first important paper in 1909. In 1914, he created a problem called the word problem for semigroups. This problem helps us understand how computers might stop working on tasks. He had one known student named Thoralf Skolem. There is also a special type of programming language named after him called Thue.
Publications
Axel Thue wrote important papers about numbers and patterns. One famous paper came out in 1909 in a math journal. Another paper was published in 1977 but was written much earlier, in 1912. Mathematicians still study these papers today.
