BBC Urdu

BBC Urdu (Urdu: بی بی سی اردو) is a digital television station that shares news and stories with people who speak the Urdu language. It was part of the BBC World Service and had a website where people could read news and listen to radio programs online. The radio shows were broadcast from Broadcasting House in London and from places in Pakistan and New Delhi, India.

BBC Urdu also had a special channel for children called CBeebies. Its main audience was viewers in Pakistan and India, helping them stay informed about what is happening around the world.

History

The BBC Urdu Service started in May 1940 as the BBC Hindustani Service. It began to share news when some countries were spreading false information. After India became independent in 1947, the service split into two parts—one for Hindi speakers and one for Urdu speakers.

In 1967, the Pakistan Service changed its name to the Urdu Service to reach more Urdu-speaking people in Europe, Pakistan, India, and the Gulf areas. Later, on December 30, 2022, the BBC stopped its Urdu Radio broadcasts to save money.

Programs

BBC Urdu has many programs for viewers. One popular show is called Sairbeen. The channel gives news and other content in the Urdu language for people in the Indian subcontinent.
