Bacha Khan International Airport (IATA: PEW, ICAO: OPPS), formerly known as Peshawar International Airport, is an international airport located in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is the fourth-busiest airport in the country and sits on the southwestern end of the city of Peshawar.
One special feature of the airport is that a railway line called the Khyber train safari crosses one of its main runways. This train goes to the town of Landi Kotal in the Khyber Pass and is meant for tourism.
The airport was renamed on 27 January 2012 after Abdul Ghaffar Khan, known as Bacha Khan. He was a leader of the Khudai Khidmatgar and an important Pashtun nationalist figure. From 2016 to 2018, the airport underwent major rebuilding.
History
Bacha Khan International Airport is located in Peshawar, a city in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa area of Pakistan. It is about 180 km from Islamabad, the country’s capital, and takes around two hours to reach by car.
The airport started as a small airfield in 1927, serving planes traveling between East Asia and Europe. It became more important after Pakistan became independent from British rule. In 1965, it became an international airport with the first flight from Kabul, Afghanistan, operated by Pakistan International Airlines. Over the years, the airport grew with more flights and upgrades to its buildings and facilities.
Structure
Peshawar is a busy airport with many flights going around the world. People are working to improve the airport so it can meet rules for international travel. The airport has places where travelers can make calls, change money, get cash from machines, use the internet, buy gifts or snacks, rent cars, and more.
The runway at the airport is very long and wide, and it even has a train track crossing over it. This is unusual and happens only sometimes. The airport can handle big airplanes like the Boeing 777-300ER. It also has special areas where airplanes can park, and two air bridges were added in 2018 to help passengers get on and off planes more easily.
