Baetic System
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The Baetic System or Betic System (Spanish: Sistema Bético) is one of the main systems of mountain ranges in Spain. It stretches across the southern and eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula. This mountain range is also called the Cordilleras Béticas (Baetic Mountain Ranges) or Baetic Mountains.
The name of this mountain system comes from the ancient Roman region of Baetica. Baetica was an important Roman province in ancient Hispania. These mountains are a key part of Spain's natural landscape.
Geography
The Baetic System is a group of mountain ranges. They stretch from western Andalusia to the Region of Murcia, southern Castile-La Mancha, and southern Land of Valencia. To the north, these mountains are separated from the Meseta Central and the Sierra Morena by the valley of the Guadalquivir. The Iberian System is north of the eastern part of the Prebaetic System, the northernmost part of the Baetic System. The mountains in this system usually run from southwest to northeast.
The most famous range in the Baetic System is the Sierra Nevada, home to Mulhacén, the tallest mountain in mainland Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. The Rock of Gibraltar is also part of the Baetic System, but the Cabo de Gata area to the east, made of volcanic rock, is not included.
Geology
The Baetic System is part of a big area called the Gibraltar Arc. This arc is the westernmost part of something called the Alpine Orogeny. We do not fully know how this area was formed.
The Rif mountains in Morocco and the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca are also part of this system. The Gibraltar Arc runs along the coast of Morocco from Oujda to Tangier, crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, and continues through Spain from Cádiz to Valencia and the Balearic Islands.
Ecology
The Baetic System has many different plants, like Mediterranean forests, woodlands, and scrub. You can find shrublands, oak woodlands, broadleaf forests, and coniferous forests. These plants change depending on how high you are, the soil, and the shape of the land.
Together with the Rif Mountains in Morocco, which are across the Alboran Sea, the Baetic System is one of the Mediterranean basin’s important areas for plants and animals, called biodiversity hotspots. The mountains have many special plants, including some very old types from ancient laurel forests that grew when the area was much wetter millions of years ago.
