Beijing Suburban Railway

A colorful map showing the different train lines of the Beijing Suburban Railway system.

The Beijing Suburban Railway, also called BCR or Beijing City Rail, is a special train service. It helps people travel between the busy city of Beijing and the areas just outside the city. These trains run on tracks used by other trains. They are made for people who live a little farther away and need a quick way to get into the city.

Line S2's NDJ3 from Yanqing to Huangtudian

Unlike the Beijing Subway, which has many short lines all around the city, the suburban railway has longer lines. These lines reach into the countryside. This makes it easier for people living in places like outlying districts to get to work, school, or visit friends and family.

The service is run by the China Railway Beijing Group, which is part of the Ministry of Railways. This group is different from the one that runs the Beijing Subway. Right now, there are four main lines in use: Line S2, Sub-Central line, Huairou–Miyun line, and Tongmi line. These lines help connect more parts of the area to the city.

History

The Beijing Suburban Railway started in 2008 with Line S2. Since then, more lines like the Sub-Central line and the Huairou–Miyun line have opened. Over time, these lines have been extended and changed to serve the area better. For example, new stations were added, and some routes were adjusted to improve connections. In 2020, there were temporary changes while work was done, but service returned after that.
