Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Berg Castle is the main home of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It is located in the town of Colmar-Berg, in the middle of Luxembourg. The castle sits near where two important rivers, the Alzette and the Attert, meet. It has different names depending on the language: in Luxembourgish, it is called "Schlass Bierg," in French, it is "Château de Berg," and in German, it is "Schloss Berg." It is a special and historic place in Luxembourg.
History
The land at Colmar-Berg became home to the Grand Dukes of Luxembourg in 1845. After the Belgian Revolution split Luxembourg from the Netherlands, Grand Duke William II wanted a place to live in Luxembourg. He bought Berg Castle from the Pasquier family. In 1848, the constitution named it the Grand Duke's official home.
Later, in 1890, the royal families of the Netherlands and Luxembourg separated. The new Grand Duke, Adolphe, bought Berg Castle again in 1891. In 1906, William IV tore down the old castle and built a new one, finishing in 1911. This became the main home for the Grand Ducal family.
During tough economic times, the Grand Ducal family agreed to let the government own Berg Castle but still live there. In the Second World War, Nazi Germany took over the castle and changed it. After the war, it took years to fix the castle, and the family moved back in 1964.
In 2024, the future Grand Duke Guillaume planned to build a cozy cottage for his family on the castle grounds. Construction started in 2025 and will finish in 2027. For now, the current Grand Duke and Grand Duchess live there, while Guillaume and his family stay at Fischbach Castle.
Births
Three of the last five leaders of Luxembourg were born at Berg Castle. They are Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde, who led from 1912 to 1919, Grand Duchess Charlotte, who led from 1919 to 1964, and Grand Duke Jean, who led from 1964 to 2000.
Grand Duke Henri, who led from 2000 to 2025, was born at Betzdorf Castle, and Grand Duke Guillaume V, who has led since 2025, was born at Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital in Luxembourg City.
