Bruit Island

Bruit Island, also called Pulau Bruit in Malay, is a beautiful island in the Rejang Delta. It is located in Daro District, which is part of Mukah Division in Sarawak, Malaysia, about 150 km northwest of Kuching. The island covers 417 square kilometres and is home to around 9,342 people. It is the second largest island in Malaysia after Banggi Island.

One special feature of Bruit Island is its mudflats at the northern end. These mudflats have been chosen as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. This means the area is very important for many kinds of birds and helps protect their homes. The island is a great place for nature lovers and anyone who enjoys seeing wildlife.

History

Bruit Island had people living there before the year 1830. We know this from a book named Sarawak and Its People.

Geography

Bruit Island is located in the Rejang Delta. The South China Sea is to the north and west, Sarikei is to the south, and Kuala Matu is to the east. The island is separated from nearby islands and the mainland by the Batang Paloh river to the south and Muara Lassa to the east.

People travel to and from the island using ferries. There are two ferry points: one at the southern end and another on the eastern side. The southern ferry goes to Tanjung Manis, a seaport, and Sibu town. The eastern ferry goes to Daro town and Mukah, the main administrative center. Two bridges are being built to connect the island to the mainland.

Many fishing villages are along the island's coasts, especially on the west side facing the South China Sea. The two largest villages are Kampung Semop and Kg. Bruit. Roads connect the villages.
