Canada at the 1928 Winter Olympics

Canada took part in the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This was one of the first times Canada joined the Winter Olympic Games, and they have been part of every Winter Olympics since.

The Canadian Olympic Committee chose W. A. Hewitt to lead the team as head of mission. He helped organize travel for the athletes. The team included people who competed in figure skating, speed skating, skiing, and ice hockey. In total, there were 47 people in the Canadian team, including Hewitt.

The team traveled by ship from Halifax on the SS Arabic to Cherbourg, and then went to St. Moritz for the Olympics. After the games, they sailed back to Canada on the SS Celtic.

Medalists

Canada joined the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. This was one of many times Canada was part of the Winter Olympic Games. Canadian athletes competed in sports on snow and ice. Some of them won medals for Canada.

The games showed how good Canadian athletes are at winter sports.

Figure skating

In the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, figure skating had events for men, women, and pairs. The competitions showed the skill and grace of athletes from many countries, including Canada.

Ice hockey

The team from the University of Toronto Graduates played for Canada in ice hockey at the 1928 Winter Olympics. Their coach, Conn Smythe, could not go, but the team played very well. They won all their games and got the gold medal.

The best teams from each group, and Canada, played a special round to decide the medals.

Nordic combined

In the 1928 Winter Olympics, athletes competed in two events for Nordic combined: 18 km cross-country skiing and normal hill ski jumping. The cross-country skiing part was also part of another event, so some athletes did both. Not all athletes did this because each country could only send a certain number of players for each event.

The ski jumping event was held separately, and you can see the results in the table below.

Ski jumping

In the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, athletes from many countries, including Canada, competed in ski jumping. This event tested how far and accurately players could jump down a special hill of snow.
