A historical portrait of Marco Porcio Caton Major, an important figure from ancient times.

Marcus Porcius Cato, also known as Cato the Censor, the Elder, and the Wise, was a famous Roman soldier, senator, and historian. He lived from 234 to 149 BC and believed strongly in old Roman ways.

Cato came from a family that served in the army. When not fighting, he worked in agriculture, following his ancestors. He held many important positions in Rome, including military tribune, quaestor, aedile, praetor, consul, and censor. In each role, he worked hard to protect Rome's traditions.

Cato was the first person to write history in Latin. His book, Origines, told the story of Rome, though only pieces of it remain today. He also wrote De agri cultura, a book about farming, rituals, and recipes, which is the oldest known piece of writing in Latin prose.

His title "the Elder" helps distinguish him from his great-grandson, Cato the Younger, who was a senator and opponent of Julius Caesar.

Biography

Cato the Elder was born in a town called Tusculum. His family was known for being brave soldiers. Cato worked hard to earn respect.
