Château-Thierry
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Château-Thierry is a French town in the department of Aisne, in the region of Hauts-de-France. It is part of the historic area known as Champagne. The town's name may come from an old king named Theuderic IV, but this is not certain.
This town is special because the famous writer Jean de La Fontaine was born here. Two important battles happened near Château-Thierry during World War I: the First Battle of the Marne and the Second Battle of the Marne. The area around the town is known as the country of Omois. Château-Thierry is proud to be one of 64 French towns that have received the Legion of Honour.
History
In the late years of the western Roman empire, a small town called Otmus was settled where the Soissons-Troyes road crossed the Marne river. During the 8th century, Charles Martel kept king Theuderic IV prisoner in the castle of Otmus. At this time, the town was called Castrum Theodorici, which later became Château-Thierry, meaning "Castle of Thierry".
Château-Thierry grew important when Joan I, Queen of Navarre and Countess of Champagne, married the King of France Philippe IV le Bel. The town was captured by different leaders over time, but Joan of Arc helped free it in 1429 without any fighting. The French writer Jean de La Fontaine was born there in 1621, and his home is now a museum.
Château-Thierry was the site of two important battles: the Battle of Château-Thierry (1814) during the Napoleonic Wars, and the Battle of Château-Thierry (1918) in World War I.
Geography
Château-Thierry is in the Marne Valley. The town is surrounded by hills and vineyards, which are typical of the Champagne area. It is where three regions meet: Hauts-de-France to the north, Île-de-France to the west, and Grand Est to the east.
The town is near several other cities. It is about 85 km (52 miles) from Paris, 51 km (31 miles) from Reims, and 45 km (27 miles) from both Meaux and Épernay.

Château-Thierry is well known in the United States because it is near the site of the Battle of Belleau Wood. This battle was the first victory of the US Marines outside the United States. A memorial stands on the hills above the town. In the basement of the American Monument is a small museum about the battle. Every year, US Marines visit to honor the soldiers from World War I. President Macron once gave an oak tree from Belleau Wood as a gift to President Trump, and they planted it together in the White House gardens. You can walk through the town's old streets and see buildings from medieval times, such as the Balhan Tower and the 12th-century Church of Saint Crepin. The town has kept its historic feel in the center, with newer homes on the edges.
The town is cut in half by the Marne River, which flows into the Seine in Paris. In the Middle Ages, the river helped the town trade with Paris. Today, people enjoy walking along the riverbanks, and there are tours on river boats.
