Classical mythology

Classical mythology, also known as Greco-Roman mythology, is the collection of stories and beliefs from the ancient Greeks and Romans about their gods, heroes, and the world around them. These stories have been passed down for thousands of years and still influence our culture today. Words like mythos mean stories or tales in ancient Greek.
When the Romans took control of Greece, they used many of the same stories but kept their own names for the gods. This means that the Roman god Jupiter is the same as the Greek god Zeus. Similarly, the Roman goddess Venus is the same as the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and the Roman god Neptune matches the Greek god Poseidon.
Even though Latin was the main language in Europe during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, people often used the Latin names for the gods. But in the 1800s, people started using both the Greek and Roman names more often. Now, both Zeus and Jupiter are used to talk about the king of the gods in classical stories.

Further information: Greek mythology and Roman mythology
The stories in Classical mythology are not real like history or science. They are old tales made up by people in ancient Greece and Rome to explain the world, share their values, and help them understand life. These stories often include gods, heroes, and magical beings, and they were very important to the religions and cultures of those times.
Greek myths are linked to ancient Greek religion and often tell about gods and special heroes. Important sources for these stories include the Homeric epics, such as the Iliad and the Odyssey, as well as plays by writers like Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Roman myths focus more on human stories and the idea of destiny, with gods appearing less often. One famous Roman myth is about the birth of Romulus and Remus and the start of Rome.
Later, the Romans mixed their gods with Greek gods, telling Greek stories but using Roman names. This mixing continued into the Renaissance, where these myths were used in art and literature. Over time, the myths from Greece and Rome became one tradition and influenced many parts of later Western culture.
