Deaf basketball is a special way to play basketball. The players are deaf. In this game, players use sign language instead of talking or listening to a whistle. This helps everyone understand the game and work together as a team. Deaf basketball shows that sports can be fun and fair for everyone, no matter how they hear or communicate. It helps make sure all people can enjoy playing together.
National associations
Basketball for deaf players is organized by special groups in many countries. These include Deaf Basketball Australia, Deaf Basketball UK, and the United States of America Deaf Basketball. These groups help arrange games and events for deaf basketball players.
Players
Deaf basketball is known because of players like Lance Allred. He played basketball with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Cleveland Cavaliers. Allred has trouble hearing and uses a hearing aid. He later played basketball in Europe.
Another famous deaf basketball player is Miha Zupan from Slovenia. He also has trouble hearing and plays as a power forward in Europe.
Deaf International Basketball Federation
The Deaf International Basketball Federation (DIBF) is the main group that helps organize basketball for deaf people around the world. It works with big groups like the International Basketball Federation and the Deaflympics.
In February 2003, the DIBF became its own group during the Winter Deaflympics in Sundsvall, Sweden.
The DIBF helps grow deaf basketball everywhere by teaching and organizing events. It plans and runs international competitions and keeps track of the history of these games.
