Dean Hewitt, born on 9 November 1994, is an Australian curler from Melbourne. In 2022, he and his teammate Tahli Gill made history by becoming the first Australian curling team to qualify for the Winter Olympics. This was a big moment for Australian winter sports.

Hewitt and Gill continued to do well and won the 2026 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. They were the first Australian team to ever win a World Curling Championship title. Their success has inspired many young athletes in Australia and around the world. Curling, a sport that needs skill and teamwork, has gotten more attention because of athletes like Dean Hewitt.

Career

Dean Hewitt started playing curling with his mother, Lynn Hewitt. They represented Australia at the 2017 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship and the 2018 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship.

Later, Dean teamed up with Tahli Gill. In 2019, they reached the semifinals of the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Championship but didn’t win a medal. Their fourth-place finish was Australia’s best at that time. They tried to qualify for the 2020 championship, but it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, Dean and Tahli qualified for the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first Australian curling team to do so. Although they finished in tenth place, they kept working hard. Over the next few years, they became one of the top teams in the world.

In 2025, they won a bronze medal at the 2025 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. They tried again to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics but didn’t make it this time. However, they didn’t give up! At the 2026 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, they worked hard, beat Italy in the semifinals, and then defeated Sweden to win the gold medal. This was their first world championship and the first world championship title ever for Australia in curling.
