Ethnic groups

Guinea has many different groups of people. One of the largest groups is the Fulɓe, also called Peuhl, Peul, Fula, or Fulani. They mainly live in the mountainous area called Fouta Djallon. Another big group is the Maninka, called Malinke or Mandingo. They live mostly in the grassy areas of Upper Guinea and the Forest region. The Susus or Soussous live along the coast, including the capital city, Conakry.

There are also smaller groups, such as the Gerzé or Kpelle, Toma, and Kissis, who live in the forest region. Along the coast, you’ll find the Bagas, including the Landoumas and Koniaguis.

Languages

French is the official language of Guinea. Each ethnic group also speaks its own language. Some languages, like Susu and Maninka, use a special writing system called the N'Ko script. This script is becoming more common for the Maninka language.

Religion

Guinea is a country where most people follow Islam, especially the Sunni tradition. Some people practice Christianity, including Catholicism, or follow traditional ethnic religions. A few people follow other religions or have no religious beliefs. Most of the population is Muslim, with Christians and followers of traditional beliefs making up the rest.
