History

Diadema grew because it is between the coast and the city of São Paulo. In the early 1700s, a road connected São Bernardo do Campo and Santo Amaro, helping people travel there. Today, two main streets, Antonio Piranga and Piraporinha, started as these old roads.

Until the 1940s, Diadema had four neighborhoods: Piraporinha, Eldorado, Taboão, and Vila Conceição. These areas were far apart and only linked by rough roads. Each neighborhood had its own life. Piraporina and Taboão were close to São Bernardo do Campo, while Eldorado was near São Paulo because of the Billings Reservoir. Vila Conceição was made up of farms.

Progress came in 1900 when Antônio Piranga built a steam-powered sawmill. This sawmill worked for twenty years and helped a furniture business in São Bernardo do Campo. Soon after, the old cattle path, Estrada da Vila Conceição, began to change with more industry and city growth.

Education

Diadema has many places for higher learning. There is a campus of the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira, a branch of the São Paulo State Technological College, and a regional department of the Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial.

The Universidade Federal de São Paulo started in 2007 and offers degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, pharmacy, and biology. Later, it added industrial chemistry, environmental sciences, and a science licentiate degree.

Media

Diadema’s telephone services were once provided by the Companhia Telefônica da Borda do Campo. In July 1998, this company was bought by Telefónica. Later, in 2012, Telefónica began using the Vivo brand. Today, Vivo offers services for mobile phones, landline calls, internet (with fiber optics and 4G), and television (both satellite and cable).
