Djibouti at the 1984 Summer Olympics

Djibouti joined the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, United States from July 28 to August 12. This was the first time Djibouti ever joined the Olympics. The country sent three athletes to run the marathon. Their names were Djama Robleh, Ahmed Salah, and Omar Abdillahi Charmarke. They tried their best, but did not win a medal.

Background

Djibouti joined the Olympics for the first time in 1984. The country became independent from France in 1977. They did not join the 1980 Moscow Olympics because of a disagreement about the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

Two of Djibouti's runners were well-known. Dajama Robleh won a silver medal in a marathon in 1982. Ahmed Salah had also run in big races before the Olympics.

Athletics

Djibouti took part in the Olympics for the first time in 1984. All three of its athletes ran in the men's marathon. The race started at Santa Monica College and finished at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Djama Robleh carried Djibouti's flag and ran the marathon in two hours, eleven minutes, and thirty-nine seconds, finishing eighth. This was a new record for Djibouti. Ahmed Salah finished twentieth with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 59 seconds. Omar Abdillahi Charmarke came in thirty-second place, finishing in two hours, nineteen minutes, and eleven seconds. The winners were from Portugal, Ireland, and Great Britain.
