Dutch Fork

The Dutch Fork is a special area in central South Carolina. It lies across three counties: Lexington, Newberry, and Richland. This place sits between two rivers, the Saluda River and the Broad River, where they come together to form the Congaree River.

The name "Dutch Fork" comes from the first people who settled there, who were from Germany. The word "Dutch" here is an old way of saying "Deutsch," which means German. Many of these settlers were Protestants. They began to live in this area between the years 1730 and 1766. At that time, the leaders of the Province of South Carolina encouraged people from other countries to move there by offering them good deals. This made the Dutch Fork an important place for early settlers in the history of the area.

The Dutch Fork today

In the Dutch Fork area, German traditions are still seen in place-names, family names, and Lutheran churches, some of which are very old. Newberry is special because it has more than 10% Lutheran people, which is the only county in South Carolina with this. There are also schools like Dutch Fork High School and a shopping place called the Dutch Square Center that keep the area's name alive. A special type of flower called the Dutch Fork cultivar of the China rose (Rosa chinensis) was created there. Since 2005, a monthly newspaper named The Dutch Fork Chronicle has been sharing news from the area.
