California has the largest public school system in the United States, with over 6 million students from kindergarten through 12th grade. About 25% of these students are learning English, which is more than the national average. The state has programs to help students who might leave school early, and these have helped lower the number of students who do this.

Public schools in California get money from different places, with the Local Control Funding Formula being the main source. This funding can be different, often giving more money to schools in wealthier areas. Many school buildings need repairs to be safe. Some schools have had problems like broken heating and cooling systems, which can make it hard for students to learn comfortably.
