Francisco Palóu
Francisco Palóu (1723–1789) was a Spanish Franciscan missionary. He helped build missions on the Baja California Peninsula and in Alta California. He worked with his mentor, Junípero Serra, to create many mission buildings that are still there today. As a member of the Franciscan Order, Palóu became the leader of missions in both Baja California and Alta California.
Palóu spent most of his life, from his early twenties until he died at age 66, working in the Spanish mission system. He was known for being a careful student, a strong believer, and a dedicated missionary. He also wrote a biography of Serra and made multi-volume histories about how Spain explored and settled in the Californias. His work helped shape the early history of California.
Biography
Francesc Palóu was born in Petra, Mallorca, and joined the Franciscan Order. He traveled with Junípero Serra to New Spain in 1740, working as a missionary in the Sierra Gorda region of Querétaro. When the Jesuits left Baja California in 1768, Palóu was assigned to San Javier mission. The next year, Serra went north to start missions in Alta California, and Palóu took charge of the Baja California missions.
Palóu traveled widely as a missionary in the Spanish colonization of the Americas. He helped establish many missions in Alta California, working closely with Serra. Palóu assisted in setting up missions such as Mission San Francisco de Asís and later helped found Mission Santa Cruz and Mission Dolores. After Serra passed away, Palóu briefly led the missions in Upper California before retiring to Mexico, where he died in 1789.
