Fremont is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It is in the East Bay area of the Bay Area and had a population of 230,504 in 2020. This makes it the fourth most populous city in the Bay Area, after San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland.

The city is close to the busy Silicon Valley area, where many technology companies are based. Fremont also has a strong technology industry. Its biggest employer is a Tesla manufacturing plant.

Fremont began as a community that grew around Mission San José, which was built in 1797 by the Spanish. The city was officially created on January 23, 1956, when several smaller towns joined together. These towns were Mission San José, Centerville, Niles, Irvington, and Warm Springs. The city was named after John C. Frémont, a general who helped lead the Conquest of California from Mexico. He later served as Military Governor of California and a U.S. Senator.

History

Early history

Fremont's origins lie in the community that arose around Mission San José, founded in 1795 by the Spanish under Padre Fermín de Lasuén.

The history of Fremont began on June 6, 1797, when Mission San José was founded by Spaniard Father Fermín de Lasuén. The mission was built where the Ohlone people lived. The Ohlone were Native Americans who lived between present-day San Francisco and Monterey. They built homes from redwood bark and tule, and they hunted animals and gathered plants for food. They lived near rivers and lakes where they could fish and collect shellfish.

When Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived in 1769, they wanted to control the area. The Ohlone were taught new skills, but they also had to live in the missions and follow new beliefs. This was hard for the Ohlone people.

In 1827, the first English-speaking visitor, explorer Jedediah Smith, came to the area. By 1831, the mission had grown to hold many people. After 1834, the mission's influence decreased when the Mexican government changed the rules.

José de Jesus Vallejo, brother of Mariano Vallejo, was given land in the area and built a flour mill in Niles Canyon. In 1846, John C. Frémont led an expedition through the area, which later became part of the United States.

During the time of the California Gold Rush, the area around Mission San José grew quickly. The economy was mostly based on farming, with grapes, plants, and olives being important crops. A big earthquake in 1868 damaged many buildings. In the early 1900s, the Niles area was an early center for movie making, and Charlie Chaplin made some of his famous films there.

Incorporation

Fremont became a city in 1956 when five nearby towns joined together. During the 1950s and 1960s, the city grew with more factories and industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, many technology companies opened offices and factories in Fremont, linking the city closely to Silicon Valley. Companies like Apple and many semiconductor and telecommunications firms had important operations here.

The large automobile plant in South Fremont was a major employer for many years. In the 1980s, it became a joint project between Toyota and General Motors, called NUMMI. This plant closed in 2010, and part of it was later used by Tesla Motors for making cars.

Geography

In 1956, five small towns joined together to form the city of Fremont. These towns are now parts of Fremont, called districts. The town of Newark wanted to join but decided not to and became its own city.

Fremont has many districts, including Centerville, Niles, Irvington, Mission San Jose, and Warm Springs. Each district has its own special history and features. For example, Niles had an old movie studio and a railway, while Mission San Jose has a historic mission and many Asian American residents.
