Cárdenas’s journey helped open new paths for other explorers. It changed how people thought about the American West and influenced future maps and travels in the area.
Life
Cárdenas was born in Llerena, which was part of the Crown of Castile. He was the second son of Alonso de Cárdenas, the 1st Count of La Puebla del Maestre, and his wife Maria García Osorio. He served as the Encomiendador of Caravaca.
Cárdenas was a conquistador who worked with Francisco Vázquez de Coronado. He was sent in September 1540 to find a large river north of Cíbola. After 20 days of travel, he and his group reached the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. His team found it very hard to get down to the river because it was very steep and there was no water, so they went back to Cíbola without success.
