History

In 1910, Karl and Johanna Händlmaier started a butcher shop in Regensburg. In 1914, Johanna made a special sweet mustard that many people love to eat with Weißwurst and Leberkäse.

After World War II in 1945, Karl’s son Joseph took over the shop and ran it with his wife. When Joseph passed away in 1955, his wife Luise continued running the shop until 1964. She then sold the shops to focus only on making the sweet mustard. After Luise passed away in 1981, her daughter Christa Aumer took over the company. In 1988, Christa’s son Franz Wunderlich began leading the company. In 1992, the company moved to a new area outside the city but still makes mustard for stores like Aldi and Lidl.

Händlmaier is Germany’s top brand for sweet mustard. In 2017, they had more than 80% of the market for this type of mustard. The company is run as a GmbH & Co. KG.
