Haplogroup E-M132

Haplogroup E-M132, also called E-M33 (E1a), is a special type of genetic marker found in men. It lives on the Y-chromosome and helps scientists learn about men's ancestry and history by studying their DNA.

E-M132 comes from a larger group called E-P147 and has two main parts: E-M44 and E-Z958. These smaller parts help researchers see how people moved and changed over many years. By looking at haplogroups like E-M132, scientists can discover how different groups of people are connected in the past.

Ancient DNA

Scientists found E-M132/E1a in very old bones. One bone was from a person on the Canary Islands and another from El Hierro around the year 1000 CE.

They also found it in a person from the North Caucasus who lived long ago, between 900 and 700 BCE, and in someone from punic-era Spain.

Distribution

E-M132 Frequencies in select populations

E-M132 is most common in West Africa, especially in the country of Mali. It has also been found in around 15.6% of people in Guinea-Bissau. The Dogon people in Mali have high rates of E-M132.

Phylogenetic history

Main article: Conversion table for Y chromosome haplogroups

Before 2002, scientists had many ways to name parts of the Y-chromosome family tree. This was confusing. In 2002, big research groups worked together to make one tree for everyone to use. Later, some people made their own tree to share new findings quickly. The table below shows how old names fit into the new tree from 2002. This helps people read old research papers.

Research publications

These research teams helped create the new tree:

  • α Jobling and Tyler-Smith 2000 and Kaladjieva 2001
  • β Underhill 2000
  • γ Hammer 2001
  • δ Karafet 2001
  • ε Semino 2000
  • ζ Su 1999
  • η Capelli 2001
