Haptophyte

Haptophytes are a special group of tiny plants called algae. They are also known as Haptophytina, Haptophyta, or Prymnesiophyta, named after the algae called Prymnesium. These tiny plants can make important minerals, which helps them grow and stay healthy.
Sometimes, scientists call them Haptophyceae or Prymnesiophyceae. This name change depends on how they are grouped in the big family tree of living things. Even though scientists have learned a lot more about these algae recently, there is still some discussion about the best way to classify them.
Characteristics
Haptophytes have special parts in their cells called chloroplasts that give them their color. These chloroplasts contain substances called chlorophylls a, c1, and c2, and they also have pigments like beta-, alpha-, and gamma-carotenes, as well as fucoxanthin, which helps them look brownish-yellow.
These tiny plants usually have two flagella, which are like little tails that help them move. They also have a special part called a haptonema, which looks a bit like a flagellum but works differently. Their energy-making parts, called mitochondria, have a special shape too. Most haptophytes store energy in something called chrysolaminarin, though some families store it in a different way called paramylon.
Significance
The best-known haptophytes are coccolithophores. They make up most of the known haptophyte species. They have a shell made of special plates and are very common in the open ocean. These tiny plants are also found in lots of old rocks called chalk.
Some other haptophytes, like Chrysochromulina and Prymnesium, can sometimes create harmful blooms in the water. They are also important for growing food like oyster and shrimp in farms, because they have special nutrients that help these animals grow.

Haptophytes were once thought to be golden algae, but they are now a separate group. They have special tiny parts that help scientists identify them. Haptophytes include small algae like coccolithophores, which are important for the environment.
Haptophytes are related to cryptomonads and are part of a larger group called SAR. They have many orders and families that help scientists study them.
