Incheon is a city in northwestern South Korea, close to the capital city of Seoul and the province of Gyeonggi. It became an international port in 1883 and now has about 3 million people, making it the third-largest city in the country after Seoul and Busan.

Because of its location by the sea and its closeness to Seoul, Incheon grew quickly. It is part of the huge Seoul Metropolitan Area, one of the world's biggest cities. The city's port helped South Korea develop, and in 2003 Incheon became South Korea's first free economic zone, attracting many big businesses.

Incheon has hosted important international events, including the Asian Games in 2014. It is a key transportation center in northeast Asia, with major facilities such as Incheon International Airport and Incheon Port.

History

Jemulpo in 1890

The first records of the Incheon area go back to 475 AD, during the time of King Jangsu of Goguryeo. It was called Michuhol and was near what is now Munhak Hill. Over time, the city changed names as new kingdoms ruled the land. During the Goryeo era, it was known as Gyeongwon or Inju. The name changed to Incheon in 1413.

When the port opened in 1883, the city became more well-known internationally. During Japanese rule, it was called Jinsen. Incheon was important in big historical events, like the Battle of Chemulpo Bay during the Russo-Japanese War and the Battle of Inchon during the Korean War. Today, Incheon is a busy city and has hosted many international events, such as the Asian Games in 2014 and was named the World Book Capital in 2015 by UNESCO.

Education

On February 27, 2007, Incheon became an "English City" and started the "Incheon Free English Zone" program. The goal was to improve English skills so Incheon could grow into a big business center in northeast Asia, like Singapore. The program’s slogan was "Smile with English".

Climate

Incheon has a mild climate with four seasons. The weather is not too hot or too cold, and it feels similar to other places in Korea.

The city feels the effects of city life, which can make some areas a bit warmer. In winter, north winds blow through, and in summer, warm south winds affect the weather.

Economy

Incheon is an important part of South Korea's industrial area. Many factories were built there during the country's growth, and the city focused on making things. Since 2003, when the Incheon Free Economic Zone was created, Incheon has been growing new industries.

Today, the city is known for its work in bio industry and logistics. With plans to increase its production, Incheon aims to become a leader in these fields. The city's Incheon Airport and port help its growing logistics industry.

Air

Incheon Air Departures

Incheon International Airport is the main airport for travel to and from South Korea. Many flights leave from the airport every day, operated by airlines like Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

Sea

Incheon's port is the second largest in Korea. From there, you can take ferries to cities in China like Dalian, Qingdao, Tianjin, Dandong, and Weihai. Ferries also go to nearby islands.

Buses

From Incheon Bus Terminal, you can take buses to many places across Korea. There are also city buses that help you travel around Incheon and nearby cities like Bucheon, Seoul, and Siheung.

Trains

You can take trains from Seoul to Incheon using Seoul's subway Line 1, which stops at several stations in Incheon. There is also a special train line called the Airport Express (AREX) that goes from Incheon International Airport to Seoul Station. Some of these trains are very fast and are called KTX trains.

Subway

Incheon has its own subway system with two lines. The first line connects to Seoul's subway and goes to many places in Incheon. The second line helps people travel around the city. These subways make it easy to get around without needing a car.

Free Economic Zone

The Incheon Free Economic Zone includes areas like Songdo, Cheongna, and Yeongjong Island. It was made to help grow business, travel, and fun things to do, especially for people in Northeast Asia. This special zone makes it easier for companies from other countries to work there and helps people living there.

Songdo International City started growing in 1994 on land made from the sea. It’s meant to be a place for jobs, trading, technology, and living in a way that helps the Earth. Some parts are still being built, and big companies and international groups, like the Green Climate Fund, have offices there. Songdo uses smart technology and has lots of green spaces.

Yeongjong International City is near Incheon International Airport and is being built to be a friendly place for the environment, mixing jobs, homes, and places to visit.

Cheongna is meant to be a fun area with homes, sports, and business places for international money matters. Some plans, like for a theme park, are still getting ready.

Incheon is a large city in South Korea with many people living there. People there have different beliefs. Some believe in Protestanism, Catholicism, or Buddhism. Many people do not follow any specific belief.

Sports

Incheon is home to many sports teams.

The city has a football team called Incheon United FC. There is also a women's football team named the Hyundai Steel Red Angels. The city has a baseball team called the SSG Landers. There is a women's basketball team named Incheon Shinhan Bank S-Birds. The city also has men's and women's volleyball teams, called the Incheon Korean Air Jumbos and Incheon Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders.

The Munhak Sports Complex has a football stadium and a baseball stadium. The football stadium was used for the 2002 Football World Cup. The baseball stadium is where the SSG Landers play.

Incheon was chosen to host the 2014 Asian Games. A special cricket stadium called Yeonhui Cricket Ground was built there for the games. The city also has a football-only stadium called Incheon Football Stadium.

Tourism

Incheon is a beautiful city with many places to visit. It has several islands, such as Ganghwa Island, Yeongjong Island, and Baengnyeongdo, where you can enjoy nature walks and picnics. There are also old temples like Jeondeungsa, the oldest Buddhist temple in Korea.

The city has modern attractions too, like Incheon Chinatown, Korea’s only official Chinatown, where you can experience Chinese culture and food. Wolmido is a fun place with a boardwalk, an amusement park, and seafood restaurants. Jayu Park is Korea’s first Western-style park and has a statue of General Douglas MacArthur. Other popular spots include the Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village, Ara Canal with its bike path, and Incheon Grand Park, the biggest park in the Seoul metropolitan area.

Incheon is where many famous people live and work. Some are singers, like Lee Je-no from NCT Dream and Miyeon from I-dle. Others are actors, such as Kang Ki-young and Kwon Nara. There are also sports stars, like footballers Kim Nam-il and Cho Yong-hyung, and baseball players Choi Ji-man and Ryu Hyun-jin. The city has comedians, voice actresses, and other entertainers too.
